PE Through Rock Climbing

Challenge yourself by learning rock climbing skills – improve your personal fitness, learn and apply strategies, and practice responsible and respectful interaction with other climbers.

Competencies

Student activities

  1. Climb indoors at a local gym at least once a week
  2. Participate in strength and cardio training at a local gym
  3. Develop and execute a fitness plan based upon research
  4. Research safety guidelines, equipment use, and techniques for rock climbing
  5. Reflect weekly upon goals, improvements, struggles, and strategies for improvement
  6. Demonstrate proper technique and safety procedures to others during rock climbing expeditions
  7. Assist and encourage others during rock climbing expeditions
  8. Work toward achieving realistic goals that challenge physical and mental health
  9. Research muscle groups – how they perform and gain strength through a fitness plan
  10. Research muscle groups and conditioning specific for rock climbing

Assessment

Student was assessed throughout the ELO process to ensure understanding of the material. Student researched muscle groups and safety techniques used for Rock Climbing.  Student created a slideshow for rock climbing techniques and safety procedures, wrote fitness goals and plans, and took fitness assessments with the PE teacher as assessments. Student then completed a sixty minute presentation of learning to connect artifacts to the course competencies. The purpose of the presentation is to demonstrate a full understanding of the competencies and explain how the work  is evidence of mastery for those competencies. Student gave a twenty minute presentation that was open to the community.
