Women in Government

Observe and participate in the democratic process and learn about the leadership roles that women are playing in government.

Overview

  • Essential Question: How can I learn about the democratic process and the leadership roles women are playing in NH government?
  • Areas of study: Social Studies, Civics
  • Type and amount of credit earned: 1/2 credit
  • Community partners: Scout leader, Girls Rock the Capitol – Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains; NH State legislator

Competencies

  • Acquiring Information: determine the central idea of a source , gather evidence from a variety of sources  in diverse formats and media, integrate multiple pieces of information
  • Analyzing Information: evaluate a primary source, compare and contrast elements within a topic, analyze the factors that went into making a decision
  •  Connecting information:  organize and interpret the chronological sequence of events, connect key events to broader central themes or concepts, draw inferences and make connections with current, real world events
  • Communicating information: write responses by developing a precise claim that is supported by relevant evidence, participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions, present information and findings in a range of formats including visual and digital media

Student activities

  • Participate in a minimum of 27 hours of public speaking, women’s studies, advocacy, civics, and leadership training
  • Spend 6 business days working directly with an assigned legislator
  • Participate in local and state-wide political and legislative events
  • Stay current on legislative issues
  • Research appropriate topics and pertinent articles as recommended by mentors
  • Set individual goals for the internship
  • Keep a log book to document activities and reflections

Assessment

At the end of the internship, the student will submit a log book and make a brief presentation to the ELO Committee that reviews what has been learned and demonstrates mastery of the four ELO competencies.

More Information

It is important to ensure that the legislator who is assigned to the student is fully committed to the program and will be available for the job shadow event.
